3’ tall x 3 ½’ wide with an intermediate habit. Flowers variable: 1) white with Strong Reddish-Purple (N78D) sectors, stripes, lines, and dashes along with some Light Reddish-Purple (N78D) stripes, lines, and dashes; 2) Light Purple (84C) with irregular white edges and Light Reddish-Purple (N78D) stripes, lines, and dashes; 3) white selfs; 4) Strong Reddish-Purple (N78D) selfs. Blotch is prominent: Strong Yellow-Green (143C) over the white fields and Moderate Purplish-Red (70A) over the darker areas. Semidouble, funnel-shaped, rounded overlapping lobes with frilly edges, 3 ½” wide x 2” long, 2-3 per cluster. Blooms early midseason (early to mid May in Oak Hill, VA). Calyx Strong Yellow-Green (143C), ½” long. Foliage matte Moderate Yellow-Green (143A). Leaves elliptic with a cuneate to rounded base and broadly acute tip, concave, downturned base to tip, up to 2 1/2” long x 1 1/4” wide. Zone 7/ hardy to 0 F, at least. ‘Desiree’, Shamarello x CB #1, unnamed azalea grown by Cliff Brown. x . Selection number: #RBS 9. Breeder Code #8-90-9. Named for Jane Newman, a member of the ASA since 1983. She served for a very long time (1993-2013) on the Editorial Advisory Board of The Azalean, and contributed many articles to our journal. Jane was very active in the Northern Virginia Chapter and freely shared plants and information with its members. An avid and knowledgeable collector of all azaleas, Jane had a special interest in the Glenn Dale hybrids which she studied and photographed, and on which she was considered an expert. Jane participated in the establishment of the George Harding Memorial Azalea Garden. For her extensive contributions, Jane received the ASA Distinguished Service Award in 2009.. |
