| 2’ tall x 2 1/2’ wide with an intermediate habit. Flowers bicolor: Vivid Purplish-Red (67B) margins of varying widths with pale pink centers; a few solid purplish-red. Blotch is prominent, Deep Purplish-Red (61A). Single, funnel-shaped, oval-rounded lobes with wavy edges, 3 1/4” wide x 2 1/4” long, 2-3 per cluster. Blooms early midseason (early May in Oak Hill, VA). Calyx Moderate Yellow-Green (139D), 1/4” long. Foliage matte Moderate Olive-Green (137A). Leaf shape: elliptic, cuneate base, acuminate tip, flat edges, some concave (side-to-side), up to 2 1/2” long x 1” wide. Selection number: RBS 41. Breeder’s code: #2-1996-1. Cross = ‘Saybrook Glory’, Schroeder x ‘Dorothy Clark, Harris. Named for Dr. Joseph (Joe) Gutierrez who has supported the Northern Virginia Chapter in many ways. He has given a number of presentation on azaleas as bonsai specimens, coordinated and led a tour of the Azalea Bonsai Collection at the National Arboretum, and donated some of his azalea bonsai creations. | |||||
