2’ tall x 2 ¾’ wide with an intermediate habit. Flowers variable: 1) white with Strong Reddish-Purple (NN74B & NN74D) sectors, stripes, lines; 2) Strong Reddish-Purple (NN74B) with irregular white margins and Strong Reddish-Purple (NN74A stripes and lines; 3) Strong Reddish-Purple (NN74B) selfs. Blotch on the white fields is a small, light yellow-green. On the dark areas of those with the irregular white edge, it is Strong Reddish-Purple (NN78A). Mostly semidouble, sometimes hose-in-hose, funnel-shaped with rounded, overlapping lobes and smooth-edges 3” wide x 2” long, 2-3 per cluster. Blooms early-midseason (late April to early May in Oak Hill, VA). Calyx Moderate Yellow-Green (138C), 1/4” long. Foliage Moderate Yellow-Green (138A), matte . Leaf shape: elliptic with a cuneate base and broadly acute tip, concave side to side, up to 1 1/2” long x 3/4” wide. Zone 7. Selection number: RBS 77. Breeder code: #7-1997. Cross: CB #1, unnamed hybrid raised by Cliff Brown x 'Folly', Glenn Dale. Named for J Jackson, who has been actively involved in the ASA for many years, serving as President, Vice President, and Director at the national level. He has been a significant asset to the Vaseyi Chapter, particularly in his roles as President and speaker. For his many contributions he received the ASA Distinguished Service Award in 2018. J and his wife, Lindy, operated a non-profit educational native-plant nursery in an effort to preserve and promote deciduous azalea species. |
