2 1/4’ tall x 2 3/4’ wide with a dense to intermediate habit. Flowers Deep Pink (52B) = salmon) with a Strong Red (53B) blotch. Double, funnel-shaped with up to 20 (10 + 5 + 5) oval-rounded lobes, some with pointed tips, wavy edges, 2 1/2” wide x 1 1/2” long. Blooms midseason (early to mid May in Oak Hill, VA). Calyx Strong Yellow-Green (143A), 1/4” long. Foliage Moderate Yellow-Green (N138B), matte. Leaf shape: elliptic with a cuneate base and acuminate tip, up to 2” long x 1” wide. Zone 7. Selection number: RBS 207. Breeder code: #8-02-10. Cross: ‘Karee Lynn’, Stewart x ‘Haru-no-Hibiki’, Belgian Indian. Named for Joe Schild, Jr., who served the ASA in many ways throughout his life. He was our President for two terms, Convention Chairman, and worked on The Azalean in charge of advertising. Under his leadership, the Azalea City initiative was established. He was also responsible for seeing that an almost complete collection of the Glenn Dale azaleas was planted in a public garden. Joe was a native azalea enthusiast and an avid grower, propagator and breeder of deciduous azaleas. He often explored the mountains and gorges in the southeast and then hosted tours to share his passion with others interested in these national treasures. He wrote 27 articles that were published in The Azalean over a number of years and spoke countless times to many groups. For his extensive contributions, Joe was presented the ASA Distinguished Service Award. |
