4-10’ with an open habit. Typically orange or yellow or orange-red, usually with a blotch; scarlet, bright red, and apricot have also been seen. Tubular-funnel shape, to 2” wide, 6-15 per truss. Not fragrant. Blooms mid to late season before the leaves emerge. Leaves layered on top with stiff flat hairs closely set; short soft hairs below. Leaf shape: ovate, elliptic, or oblong, small. Hardy to -15 F; Z 6-8. Native to the Piedmont region of central Georgia to South Carolina. First described in 1789. |
