| 4-½ ft x 4 ft, 3-½" single, purple. Voted Azalea of the Year by the American Rhododendron Society. Fls3-4/bud, 1-3 buds/ball truss, openly funnel-shaped, single, 2.5"-2.75" (65-70mm) long x 3.5"-4" (90-100mm) wide, 5-lobed, wavy-edged; inside strong purplish red (71C) with strong purplish red (64B) spotting on dorsal lobe and upper wings; outside strong purplish red (71D). Calyx 0.4"-0.5" (10-13mm) long, strong yellow green (144A). Lvs elliptic, flat, cuneate base, acute apex, 2.25"-2.75" (55-70mm) x 0.75"-1.5" (19-40mm), dull, moderate olive green (147A) above; with hairs on both surfaces, white at first, becoming dark grayish reddish brown (200A) and less numerous with age. Shrub 6'-8' (1.8-2.4m) tall x 4'-5' (1.2-1.5m) wide in 8-10 years, dense habit. Plant and bud hardy to at least 0°F (-18°C) to 10°F (-12°C). March-April followed by autumn flowering as new buds mature from July to frost.
