2’ tall x 2’ wide, compact. Flowers bicolor: white with vivid purplish-red (61C), margins of varying widths, and a strong purplish-red (61B) blotch. Single, funnel-shaped, rounded, overlapping lobes with wavy edges, 2 ¾” wide x 2” long, 1-3 per cluster. Blooms early midseason (early May in Oak Hill, VA). Calyx Moderate Yellow-Green (138C), 3/16” long. Foliage Moderate Olive-Green (137B), slightly semiglossy. Leaf shape: elliptic, cuneate base, acuminate tip, concave (side-to-side), up to 1 1/2” long x 3/4” wide. Zone 7; hardy to 0°F, at least. Selection number: RBS 80. Breeder code: #33-98-2. Cross: ‘Orchido’, Ring x ‘Satellite’, Belgian Indian. Named for Dr. Joseph (Joe) H. Coleman, who has supported the society in numerous ways, both at the national and chapter level. He has served as an ASA Director and a member of the Editorial Advisory Board for The Azalean. Joe has been an avid collector and propagator of azaleas. His talks on various aspects of this subject have encompassed many groups, and he has contributed a large number of articles to The Azalean. He and his wife Donna have opened their garden on many occasions and shared untold numbers of cuttings.and plants. |
