2 ½’ 2 ½’ Zone 7, at least RBS #20-94-2 (Unnamed Stewart hybrid = ‘Asahi Sakigake’ (Belgian Indian) x ‘Marg 38-50-1 (Unnamed Back Acres)
2 ½’ tall x 2 ½’ wide, intermediate habit. Flower inside: tints of Strong Pink (52D) with areas of cream and a blotch of Light Yellow-Green (145B). Flower outside Slightly darker than the inside of the flower. Single with a few petaloid stamens, funnel-shaped with 5 rounded, overlapping, lobes with frilly edges, 3 ½” wide x 2 ¼” long, 2 per cluster. Blooms early midseason (early May in Oak Hill, VA). Calyx Strong Yellow-Green (143B), 1/8” long. Foliage Strong Yellow-Green (143A), Leaf shape: elliptic, cuneate base, acuminate tip, flat edges, concave side-to-side, downcurved base-to-tip, up to 1 ½” long x ¾” wide. Zone 7, at least. RBS #20-94-2 (unnamed Stewart seedling= [‘Asahi Sakigake’ (Belgian Indian) x ‘Margaret Douglas’ (Back Acres)] x 38-50-1 (Unnamed Back Acres). Named for George K. McLellan who has spent untold hours in the study, documentation, propagation, and preservation of our native azaleas. He has given many talks to various forum within the ASA and has contributed articles to The Azalean. In recognition for his many contributions, George was presented the ASA Distinguished Service Award and the ARS Silver Medal.
