2 1/2’ tall x 2 1/2’ wide with an intermediate to dense habit. Flowers Deep Pink (52B = salmon) with a Strong Purplish-Red (61B) blotch. Double with up to 20 petals (5 + 5 + 5 + 5), oval-rounded lobes with pointed tips and smooth edges, 2 1/2” wide x 1 1/2” wide, 1-2 per cluster. Blooms midseason (mid May in Oak Hill, VA). Calyx Moderate Yellow-Green (139C), 1/4” long. Foliage Moderate Yellow-Green (138A), semiglossy. Leaf shape: elliptic with a rounded base and acuminate tip, concave side-to-side, downcurved base-to-tip, up to 3” long x 1 1/2” wide. Zone 7 ’Haru-no-Hibiki, Belgian Indian x ‘Karee Lynn’, Stewart. Selection number: RBS 143. Breeder code: #2-02-08. Named for Edward (Ed) W. Collinst o acknowledge his involvement in the Azalea Society. He served on the Board of Governors and helped to plan Conventions. Ed helped to charter the Vaseyi Chapter and served as its President for 6 years starting in 2002. His lifelong passion for rhododendron and azaleas prompted the creation of a large showcase garden that featured these plants and many others. It became a destination for numerous garden tours. Ed also started an azalea and rhododendon display garden at the Blue Ridge Community College. He particularly enjoyed deciduous azaleas, taking pleasure in hiking through their native habitat. He led field trips to “The Balds” to help champion these treasures and impart his enthusiasm and knowledge on the subject. He made presentations to groups interested in azaleas and was a contributor to The Azalean. For this and much more, Ed was awarded the ASA Distinguished Service Award in 2008 and the Vaseyi Chapter's Augie Kehr Award in 2006. |
