2’ tall x 3’ wide with dense habit. Flowers in tints of Light Purple (75B) with Strong Reddish-Purple (78B) sectors, stripes, and lines, with an irregular white margin and Strong-Reddish-Purple (70B) blotch. Single, some with a few petaloid stamens, funnel shaped with rounded, overlapping lobes and wavy edges, 3” wide x 2” long, 1-3 per cluster. Blooms early-midseason (early to mid May in Oak Hill, VA). Calyx Moderate Yellow-Green (139C), 5/16” long. Foliage Moderate Olive-Green (137A), semiglossy. Leaf shape: elliptic with a cuneate base and acuminate tip, concave side-to-side, up to 1 3/4” long x 1” wide. Zone 7. Cross: ‘Haru-no-Hibiki’, Belgian Indian x (‘Saybrook Glory’, Schroeder x ‘Satellite’, Belgian Indian). Selection number: RBS 145A. Breeder code: #7-97-2. Named for Karel Bernady, a longtime member of the ASA. He has shared his strong interest in native azaleas by leading explorations of their habitats, making presentations to various groups, and by sharing his excellent photographs. Karel's propagation efforts of azaleas and rhododendron are legendary. A member of the Vaseyi Chapter, he has supported it in many ways. |
