4-8’ ft -15 F Plumleaf Azalea
4-8’ x 4-5’, eventually to 15-20’, upright spreading, round-topped when mature. Flowers in a range of colors including pinkish-orange, apricot, orange, scarlet, crimson, and bright red. Tubular-funnel shape, 1 ½-2” wide. Blooms very late, July to September, after the leaves have fully developed. No fragrance. Winter flower buds are greenish to light brown and glabrous. Leaves dark green above, paler below, emerge very early. Leaf shape: oval, to 5” long. The leaves and new stems are smooth. Does best in light shade. Hardy to -15 F, Zones 6-9b. Moderately easy to grow from cuttings. Native to a small area along the Alabama and Georgia border. along cool wooded ravines and stream banks. First collected by R. M. Harper near Cuthbert, Georgia in 1913.
