1 3/4' tall x 2 1/2' wide with a dense habit. Buds and flowers dark true red (53C-D) with a very dark red (53A) blotch. Single, broad funnel shape with 5 lobes that have smooth edges, 3” wide x 2” long, 2-3 per cluster. Blooms midseason (early May in Oak Hill, VA). Calyx Moderate Yellow-Green ((141 C-D), ¼” long. Leaves Moderate Yellow-Green (143B), semiglossy. Leaf shape: elliptic with a cuneate base, and acuminate tip, downcurved base-to-tip, concave side-to-side, up to 1 3/4” long x 3/4" wide. Zone 7/hardy to 0°F,. Named for Barry Sperling, who has been an active member of the Northern Virginia Chapter of the ASA, serving as President, Vice President, Corresponding Secretary and Editor of the NV Newsletter, The Clipper, for many years. He has contributed articles to The Azalean. Additionally, Barry has been a presenter on several topics, created educational materials, organized local garden tours, and opened his garden to visitors. |
